Check Out These Juneteenth 2026 Celebrations Across the Country
From Galveston to Brooklyn, here are standout Juneteenth festivals, parades and community gatherings happening this June.
As the holiday approaches, Jones says she’s happy Juneteenth has gained recognition over the years. “It matters more now because history has to be actively protected,” she says. “I just think we’re in a time where many people may know the name Juneteenth, but they don’t really know the entire story behind it.”
That story dates back to June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, but it has been a long-celebrated tradition in many Black households.
Kimya Nuru Dennis, a Richmond, Virginia, native, says she also celebrated Juneteenth as a child and vividly recalls attending her first festival as an adult in North Carolina. Now a teacher and researcher, Dennis got more involved by speaking on a Juneteenth panel about health and eventually joined a Juneteenth planning committee about a decade ago.
For her, Juneteenth represents coming together culturally and learning history in community. It’s about “learning the facts of Juneteenth beyond just the title,” she adds.
Cities across the country are honoring the history and legacy of freedom this June through vibrant festivals, showcases, gospel fests and more. Here is a curated list of Juneteenth festivities happening this year:

It has since blossomed into a thriving community event celebrating freedom through music, food, art and movement. There are activities for attendees of all ages, from DJs rocking R&B to Afrobeats, to lively games of spades and dominoes. For nearly two decades, B-H Brilliant Minds Project, Inc. has hosted its annual Juneteenth Celebration and Street Festival to honor Black history. Fittingly, this year’s theme is “remembering where we came from to rise above the odds.” Barbara Howard, founder and coordinator of B-H Brilliant Minds Project, expanded on this in a letter about the event, writing, “In a time when historical truths are being challenged, and communities are feeling the weight of injustice, this celebration stands as both remembrance and resistance.” A vendor fashion show, literacy workshops, live DJs, food, movie screenings, and health resources will be among the many festivities. The event is free for all.

As a new resident of Portland in 1945, Clara Mae Peoples was surprised to learn Juneteenth wasn’t being celebrated. That year, she launched the first observance—reportedly a 15-minute lunchtime celebration at her job. People’s passion continued throughout her life, and in 1972, she helped launch the first citywide Juneteenth celebration. Now, decades later, Peoples’ legacy lives on through Oregon’s Juneteenth Festival and Parade, with cultural exhibitions, performances, food, educational booths and more. The event is a tribute to Black resilience, liberation and cultural pride.
